LMA and IUA take first step to tackle early careers challenge – claims ‘taster’ job simulations
London, 09 October 2024: The Lloyd’s Market Association (LMA) and the International Underwriting Association (IUA) have launched two online claims job simulations to improve visibility of career opportunities in claims and provide students with an immersive, hands-on learning experience. The initiative, formed through the 2023 LMA Claims Strategy, is informed by findings in the LMA’s 2023 Heads of Claims Talent Survey, which called out an urgent need to attract candidates into the early claims talent pipeline.
The two simulations have been developed together with Forage, a platform with a global reach of over six million enrolments and collaborations with universities and charitable organisations. The platform enables students to experience work on the job, practice their skills and build confidence to source a career. In addition, the simulations connect to the London Market Group’s (LMG) London Insurance Life platform, giving access to career guides and job opportunities in specialty insurance.
Janine Powell, Claims Director of the Lloyd’s Market Association, said: “Over the past 18 months, we have identified that challenges experienced by the claims community are, in part, related to early talent attraction. We recognise that there is an urgent need to address this through collective action across the London market. The job simulations will raise the visibility of a career in claims and the skills required to build a claims career, illustrating the variety and societal value claims roles deliver.
“The job simulations will form part of a wider body of initiatives across the market, alongside a targeted effort to make adverts for claims roles more accessible and compelling to potential new hires, and to improve the education and networking benefits available to claims professionals early in their career.”
Joe Shaw, Senior Underwriting and Claims Executive at the IUA, said: “The London insurance market offers many exciting career opportunities across a wide range of claims-related functions. From problem-solving complex cases to helping individuals and businesses recover from unforeseen events, claims practitioners play a vital role. Companies are keen to showcase the rewarding and dynamic roles available in our industry and recruit the next generation of claims professionals.”
Tom Brunskill, Co-Founder and General Manager of Forage, added: “It is clear from the LMA’s research that there is a gap in the market for an educational programme that introduces early talent to the possibility of a career in claims. In our conversations over the past year, we have worked closely with the LMA, IUA and LMG to devise job simulations that will appeal to early talent and drive them towards applying for these roles. It is our hope that through this partnership, we can match up motivated people with a fulfilling career in claims.”
