Description
The Joint Specie Committee (JSC) will host an in-person education forum on Tuesday 11 November at 09.30 in the Old Library at Lloyd’s.
The forum will include a committee update followed by a panel discussion on the California wildfires.
James Garthwaite (Senior Underwriter – Fine Art & Specie, Liberty Specialty Markets) will moderate a panel of subject matter experts who will explore how incidents like this year’s wildfires in California are managed across the insurance lifecycle; from initial legal considerations and logistical challenges, through to loss adjusting and claims resolution.
Attendees will gain valuable insights into the practical and legal challenges involved, and how the market is evolving to better manage such events.
Panellist will include:
- Alex Tarkian, Managing Partner, Tarkian & Associates: Alex has served as California coverage and litigation counsel for the London market for more than 29 years, specialising in the fine art and specie, cargo and subrogation markets. He works closely with independent loss adjusters, field experts and forensic accountants, and regularly conducts Examinations Under Oath, drafts coverage determination letters to insureds and defends the London market in insurance bad faith litigation matters.
- Peter Schifrin, President, Schifrin, Gagnon & Dickey (SGD): Peter has spent more than 40 years in the insurance industry. He is President of SGD, a California-based company that provides claims adjusting, investigation and administration services. As a licensed independent adjuster and private investigator, Peter has extensive experience handling a wide variety of claims, including property, casualty and many specialty lines. He also serves on the California Department of Insurance Curriculum Board and the board of the California Insurance Wholesalers Association.
- Ryan Siu, General Adjuster, McLarens: Ryan is a General Adjuster with McLarens, based in California, specialising in fine art, jewellery and complex property losses. He brings nearly a decade of experience handling high-value and specialty claims for both the London and North American markets. His background includes catastrophe response, museum and gallery losses, and specie risk surveys across the United States and Canada. Ryan has managed large assignments involving wildfire, hurricane and environmental losses, and frequently supports underwriting clients with valuation, risk mitigation and subrogation strategy.
- Simon Hornby, Principal, Strata Consulting: Simon has worked in high-value logistics for more than 40 years and was most recently Senior Vice President of Crozier Fine Arts, a global provider of specialist art logistics services. Since retiring from Crozier at the end of 2024, he has been providing consulting services to several art services companies and is a founding partner of Palette, a next-generation portal that simplifies fine art transport. Before joining Crozier in New York City in 2009, Simon was Senior Vice President and Executive Director of Global Risk Partners, an international risk control, loss prevention and adjusting firm specialising in fine art and valuables. There, he was instrumental in developing the only global art storage assessment and accreditation programme (GRASP) for the London insurance market.
