Background
The LMA International Bodily Injury Index is a three-year strategic project developed by the LMA’s International Liability business panel.
In order to help track social inflation we are attempting to track personal injury awards across 80+ jurisdictions across the world (excluding the USA). We cover 26 European countries, 20 countries in Latin America & Caribbean, 10 in Africa and 22 in Asia. In addition, the index provides state-level data for Australia and provincial data for Canada.
Initially the project will run for three years from 2024. We will collect the data once per year thus creating an index. We believe this index will be a valuable resource for members to track severities, compensation claims and jurisdictional variances, international comparisons and benchmarking.
In cooperation with law firm DAC Beachcroft and their network of associate firms we have developed average damages/compensation that would be awarded by a court to a hypothetical claimant:

The victim is a 40-year-old professional male. The victim is married with two children. He is an office worker in a major city and earns the average salary in your jurisdiction; he is the primary earner for his household.
The accident occurred when the victim was on the defendant’s premises as a visitor (member of the public). Liability is not in dispute. A claim has been successfully brought into court by the victim and his family.
The index provides data for the following scenarios:
- Minor / Superficial injuries
- Broken Limb (arm or leg)
- Amputation below the knee
- Total loss of sight in both eyes
- Psychiatric injury
- Moderate brain/head injury
- Paralysis
- Death
The Lloyd’s Market Association International Bodily Injury Index now has a new home as part of the LIMOSS Market Business Glossary (MBG). The Index helps managing agents track personal injury awards across more than 80 global jurisdictions, providing an average compensation value for a wide range of personal injury claims.
By moving to the MBG, managing agents can now access, manipulate and download this data through an intuitive web portal and API. The Index remains an elective service and is subject to an additional fee.
